Joao Pedro’s stunning full debut for Chelsea in their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final win over Fluminense came as no surprise to former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Pedro, signed just over a week from Brighton in a £60million transfer, produced two stunning finishes against his former club to book a final date with PSG or Real Madrid on Sunday.

The 23-year-old striker’s display against the Brazilian giants proved what a talent Pedro is but DAZN pundit Berbatov, a two-time Premier League winner with United, said it was to be expected of such a talent.

Speaking on DAZN’s post-match show, Berbatov said: “When you’re a good player, you don’t need much time to adapt.

“He’s familiar with the Premier League and with Chelsea, and he showed why I was so excited to see him play from the first minute.

“They were great goals – the first one was pure class and the second was even more dramatic.

“So for me, he was obviously player of the match because of the goals and his performance will give him even more confidence going forward.”

Pedro refused to celebrate against his former club as a mark of respect to Fluminense.

Berbatov’s fellow DAZN pundit and ex-Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel said of Pedro: “What a way to make an immediate impact for your team.

“And what a class act he was by not celebrating because he played for Fluminense since he was a kid.

“He showed a bit of his quality, not only with his finishing but his movement off the ball. I think he was spectacular throughout the game.”

Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards was also a pundit on the post-match show and was similarly gushing about Pedro.

“It was a very mature performance,” said the American.

“There was a lot of emotion surrounding the game, with it being a semi-final and against his boyhood club.

“He scored two goals and didn’t celebrate afterwards. I was impressed with him.”
