Former Man United defender believes United need to target TWO strikers this summer

Manchester United may well be basking in the triumph of making the Europa League final, but the club has some massive work to do ahead of next season.

Even a European trophy may not salvage the current campaign, where the Red Devils are set for the worst-ever Premier League finish as they languish in the bottom half of the table.

Recruitment will be key this summer, especially in the attacking areas where many believe United have been lacking this year, including former defender Gary Pallister.

Speaking to William Hill Vegas, Pallister singled out one of the best young forwards as a possible signing but also believes his former club needs a proven elite goalscorer as well.

He said, “Liam Delap is aggressive, always looks a threat and was well schooled at Manchester City. But he’s still young, so if United sign him, I think they still need to sign a proven goal scorer as well.

“Manchester United have already gone down that route with Rasmus Højlund. What Ruben Amorim needs is a ready-made striker, a player who is going to get 20 or more goals a season and has experience.

“But it will be difficult to find a player of that quality, if you think the likes of Newcastle and Chelsea are finishing above United and looking to strengthen their team too.

“That is why Champions League qualification is so important. It would be huge, in terms of what United can do in the summer to attract players to Old Trafford, and to spend money on players. The Champions League makes a hell of a difference.”

Despite their difficulties, Pallister has also singled out a fellow centre-half for his performances over the course of the season. Heaping praise on Harry Maguire for the way he's bounced back from the heavy criticism he faced last year to become a key member of Ruben Amorim's side.

Adding, "When you think about where Harry Maguire was just over a year ago — with talk of him leaving Manchester United — it wouldn’t have surprised anyone if he had. The fans were on his back, the press certainly were, and he was out of the team, clearly struggling.

“But credit to him — Harry never spat his dummy out. He stayed professional throughout, kept his head down, and proved a lot of people wrong. He got his chance due to injuries, took it, and worked his way back to being a permanent fixture in the side. I'd say he's been one of the standout performers this season.

“I’m genuinely pleased for him. It takes serious character to come through a tough spell like that, especially at Man Utd. I was lucky enough to go through my rough patches early in my career when I had big characters around me to help. Harry didn’t have that to the same extent — he's had to do it more or less on his own.

“All power to him for how he’s managed himself and the way he’s played. He’s now a leader again, setting an example and even helping younger players like Leny Yoro. I’d definitely say he’s given England boss Thomas Tuchel something to think about — he’s playing some of his best football in the Premier League right now.”
