Former Premier League defender says Manchester United players 'have given up on this season'

Manchester United are having a season to forget, as they have dropped to eighth place and have only won one of their last five Premier League matches.

The Red Devils were unceremoniously bounced from the Champions League at the group stage and could miss out on Europe entirely next season.

Their one silver lining is that they will play in the FA Cup final later this month, although their recent form does not inspire confidence heading into a match against arch-rivals Manchester City.

Regardless of what happens in the cup final, many expect big changes ahead for United. With much expected turnover, the current players could already be looking forward to the end of the campaign and putting this mediocre season behind them.

That is exactly what Bacary Sagna thinks is happening after United's listless 4-0 loss at Crystal Palace over the weekend, as the former Premier League defender tells Paddy Power that he believes United's players are simply going through the motions.

“There is no momentum at Manchester United," Sagna said. "If it was easy for any coach, it would be different. Losing 4-0 to Crystal Palace, people will question Erik ten Hag and his ability to train the team, but it seemed like the United players have given up on this season.

“From one season to another, it can be very different – we saw it with Arsenal where people were demanding that Mikel Arteta step down but look where he is now. I think Ten Hag needs to be given more time, forget about this season, and just try to finish it on a positive note.

“I would not get rid of him just because they have had a bad season, he’s not the one on the pitch – of course, he’s making the selections, but he's selecting good players. If it’s against you, it’s against you – and it seems to be against United this season.”
