There will be a new face in the Genoa dugout ahead of their relegation scrap with Fiorentina this weekend, after the club officially appointed Daniele De Rossi as their new manager.

The former Italian international replaces Patrick Vieira, who was relieved of his duties last weekend following the club's disappointing start to the campaign.

De Rossi has reportedly signed a deal until the end of the season with the club, with the option of extending the contract if he manages to keep Genoa in the top flight.

The 42-year-old played over 600 games for Roma and won 117 caps for his country as a player, including being part of Italy's World Cup-winning squad of 2006. He retired after a spell in Argentina with Boca Juniors and takes up his third coaching post following spells at Serie B side SPAL and Roma in 2024.

He takes over a Genoa side who sit in 18th place in the Serie A table, and who had failed to win any of their first nine games of the season under former boss Viera.

They did, however, taste victory for the first time in 2025-26 last weekend, with an injury-time win over Sassuolo.

Upon announcing De Rossi's arrival, who will be presented to the media on Friday, the club released a statement, which said, “Genoa announces that it has entrusted the first-team management to Daniele De Rossi. AS Roma

“The new coach has already met with the players, and will direct training scheduled for this afternoon at the Signorini Sports Centre.

“His presentation to the media, along with Diego Lopez, the club’s chief of football, is scheduled for Friday, starting at 2pm. This will be combined with the pre-match press conference.

“While extending a warm welcome to Daniele De Rossi and his staff, Genoa would also like to thank Roberto Murgita and Domenico Criscito for their work.”

De Rossi will take charge of his first game on Sunday against a Fiorentina side with whom he was linked with and who are expected to name their new boss in due course.
