Josh Sheehan strike gives Bolton derby-day victory over Wigan

PA

A late goal from Josh Sheehan gave Bolton a very-well deserved third derby victory in the space of a year against Sky Bet League One rivals Wigan at the Brick Community Stadium.

Bolton created the only real chances of note in the first half, with Sam Tickle parrying out a long range shot from Xavier Simons, only for Mason Burstow to lash the follow-up well wide.

Shortly after, it took a fantastic save from Tickle to keep out a Max Conway header, after Amario Cozier-Duberry’s cross found him unmarked at the far post.

The second half was a similar story, with Bolton almost taking the lead when Sam Dalby volleyed over the top from close range, before the same player headed goalwards only for Tickle to pull off a superb low save.

Totally against the run of play, Wigan almost took an unlikely lead when Callum Wright’s cross was steered wide by Harrison Bettoni from close range.

But the goal that had been coming eventually arrived with eight minutes to go, with Sheehan’s strike from distance deceiving Tickle in the air and ending up in the Wigan net.
