Kylian Mbappe's FIFA Club World Cup tournament has been thrown into doubt after he was taken to hospital with gastroenteritis.
The French star missed training on Tuesday with a fever and wasn't selected to play in Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Al Hilal on Wednesday.
In a statement, the club confirmed their striker had "an acute case of gastroenteritis" and was admitted to hospital for "a series of tests" and his participation in the tournament is now under threat.
Gastroenteritis is an infection in the gut which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, but so far no details have been released on the status of Mbappe's illness.
Xabi Alonso's side are next in action on Sunday, when they take on Pachuca in their second group game, but they may have to do it without one of their biggest names.
In his absence, Madrid were underwhelming as they failed to impress in Alonso's first game in charge of the Spanish giants. Their Saudi opponents were the better team for much of the game, while Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered an indifferent debut for the La Liga side.
Mbappe scored 43 times for Madrid in 56 games across all competitions in his debut season and was heavily fancied to top score his way through this tournament, with Real one of the favourites to win the competition.
