Liverpool haven't had too much to shout about in recent weeks, but they'll be hoping to have a season reboot following their impressive Champions League victory over Real Madrid.

Arne Slot's men got back to winning ways at the weekend by ending Aston Villa's good run of form, and their good week continued on matchday four of the Champions League as they bested the Spanish giants.

Alexis Mac Allister's goal just after the hour was the difference between the sides, in a game which saw Madrid suffer their first defeat in Europe this season and Trent Alexander-Arnold feel the wrath of Anfield on his first return since leaving the club for Real in the summer.

It was a fully deserved win for the Merseysiders, who put that recent wretched run of form behind them to put in what former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has called the best showing of the campaign so far.

Speaking exclusively to DAZN News, thanks to Casino.org, find top online casinos, the Scot, who was part of the club's 2001 treble-winning side, was impressed with his old club, especially in winning the midfield battle.

"I thought they went into the game last night with more confidence and it showed because it was their best performance by a country mile," McAllister said.

"I think, bar none, Liverpool were excellent.  They made Real Madrid look very ordinary, and that's not easy because they're going really well at the moment as well in their domestic league.

"I thought the intensity came back into the middle of the park, they went with the sort of three tried and trusted midfielders. My eye is always drawn there because that's where I used to play.

"So I tend to watch midfielders, and I thought Liverpool looked more solid.

Slot will hope the win will now recharge their season, after suffering four league defeats in a row and losing to Galatasaray in the Champions League.

It's seen their title defence take a huge dent, with the Reds now trailing league leaders Arsenal by seven points in the Premier League. And while McAllister thinks some of the criticism during that run went too far down the line, he admits it could be difficult now for Liverpool to retain their crown.

Adding, "There are still twists and turns. I am looking at Arsenal, and I watched them in the early game yesterday.

"Again, another clean sheet. I think they're now over 800 minutes now (without conceding). So they don't look as if they're going to lose a lot of games.

"But come Christmas, New Year, when you get that little rush of games, things can happen. To keep going the way they're going, it's very difficult.

"Liverpool can only take each game. They can't be looking too far ahead. But there's a big points gap to catch up. All Liverpool can do is beat what's in front of them."

What is in front of them next is a trip to the Etihad on Sunday and second-placed Manchester City, a game that a week ago would have been the last thing Slot and his side needed.

However, given the confidence the last week would have brought the champions, it would be foolish to rule the Reds out of anything just yet.
