For the first time since 2003, neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi are among the nominees for the men's Ballon d'Or.
The two superstars have dominated the footballing world for the better part of two decades and have been recognised as such, with Messi claiming eight Ballons d'Or while Ronaldo has five to his name. Even in the rare years where neither man won, at least one of their names have been on the ballot for the past 20 years, with Messi the reigning men's award winner.
But Father Time marches on for everyone and the two icons have been left out of the voting process for this year's edition. Will the winner of this year's men's Ballon d'Or kickstart a new dynasty?
Meanwhile on the women's side, Aitana Bonmati looks to win the award for the second straight year after claiming her first Ballon d'Or Féminin in 2023. Should Bonmati repeat as the winner, it would be four consecutive years that the award has been be won by a Barcelona player, with teammate Alexia Putellas earning the nod in 2021 and 2022.
