Based in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires, River Plate shares the capital with a number of clubs - including rivals Boca Juniors.
Their Estadio Monumental stadium is the largest in South America and is also home to the national team.
River were formed in 1901 after two clubs "Santa Rosa" and "La Rosales" merged together to form a new team close to the La Boca neighborhood (later the home of fierce rivals Boca Juniors).
The name River Plate comes from an incident during the construction of Buenos Aires Port. After the workers had left the duties to play football, the boxes they had been working had the words ‘The River Plate’ written on them and the name was taken from that.
