Steven Schumacher challenged match-winner Josh Sheehan to add more goals to his game after the Welsh star earned Bolton a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Rotherham.
Sheehan’s first goal of the season put the Trotters ahead against their relegation-threatened visitors in first-half stoppage time.
And after substitute Sam Nombe levelled with a late penalty, Sheehan slid home the winner in the third minute of added time from Amario Cozier-Duberry’s cross.
“I am a little bit surprised because technically he is very good and can shoot,” said manager Schumacher after the midfielder’s brace. “So, I would expect him to get more.
“He has hit the post a couple of times from shots outside the box. But both his goals came from inside the box.
“He has so much quality but all the midfielders have got to start chipping in with goals. We can’t just rely on the forward players.”
Sheehan’s opener was tinged with controversy, with United believing Thierry Gale came from an offside position to impede keeper Cameron Dawson’s view.
And while having no complaints about the visitors’ late penalty when Cyrus Christie brought down Nombe, Schumacher said: “I don’t think it was offside.
“Thierry was about seven or eight yards away from the goalie. It is different if someone is standing in front but I don’t think he (Dawson) could ever not see the ball.”
Bolton’s win lifted them up to fourth, with the Millers dropping into the bottom four.
Rotherham used their perceived first-half injustice to drive them on in the second half.
And while Wanderers created more chances – notably a late miss by Joel Randall – Rotherham tested Teddy Sharman-Lowe several times before Nombe’s spot-kick equaliser.
Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw said: “When I have watched the game back and digested it a lot more as a coach rather than emotional manager then I will see the positives.”
He was more confused with Sheehan’s first goal.
“I don’t know what offside is anymore,” he said.
“The interpretation of the rule is if you make contact or if you block the view and their player clearly runs across Hamish Douglas who is going to clear it. He (Gale) has come from an offside position.
“We don’t have VAR or Premier League gadgets. So I am not sure what else I can say.”
On Wanderers’ winner – started by Tom Holmes being caught in possession – Hamshaw added: “We didn’t switch off, it was an individual mistake.
“You can’t legislate for those sometimes as a manager. I know the player will be in there hurting but that doesn’t bring us any points back. We have to get better at that.”
