It took a late goal from Jude Bellingham, but Real Madrid left the Etihad Stadium with a 3-2 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off tie on Tuesday.

The teams traded goals throughout the match, with City star Erling Haaland scoring the opening goal of the match in the 19th minute before Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé struck for the equaliser at the hour mark. Haaland would score his second of the night from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, only for Brahim Diaz to even things up six minutes later.

Then, as he has so often done in his still-young Real Madrid career, Bellingham secured a dramatic late victory for Los Blancos with an opportunistic finish in stoppage time.

"It was a weird one," Bellingham told Amazon Prime. "We played some of our best football of the season and ended up behind.

"I think we were playing well and creating a lot. We were always confident throughout the game that something would drop for us.

"I don't care what form City are in they are still an unbelievable team. It's always tricky to play against them and we finally took the chance at the end."

The result means the Spanish side are now on the front foot ahead of next week's second leg in Madrid, and Bellingham is confident that the home-field advantage will see them through to the round of 16.

"It's always good to take a lead back home and I'm sure the [Estadio] Bernabeu will come through for us," he said.
