Alexander Isak thrilled to lead Liverpool to crucial win

Alexander Isak said his goal for Liverpool on Sunday was "a long time coming."

Isak scored the first of the Reds' goals in a much-needed 2-0 win at West Ham United, allowing the team to avoid another three-match Premier League losing skid.

For the first-year Liverpool striker, who joined the club from Newcastle in a British-record transfer in the summer, goals have been hard to come by as his struggles have mirrored that of the entire club. Isak entered the match with just a single goal for his new side, and that was scored in the Carabao Cup over two months ago.

So finally getting onto the scoresheet in a league match, let alone scoring the game-winning strike, is a welcome occurrence for the 26-year-old.

"I'm aware that it has been a long time coming and I have been trying to get back to my best form," Isak told Sky Sports immediately after the match. "I'm still on the way but I am happy to get that goal.

"The best feeling today is that we win the game and that is the best way to get a good spirit in the group, but of course I am a striker so scoring goals will always help me.

"We have to use this win in a good way but also be humble. We have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum."

Liverpool kicked off the match at London Stadium fresh off back-to-back losses at Anfield, putting pressure on the Reds to come out with a result against a West Ham side undergoing a modest ascendency.

The stakes were high for both clubs, and Isak was happy to have played a part in getting his side back into the win column after three straight losses in all competitions.

"We knew it was going to be difficult to get back to winning ways after our recent form," Isak said. "Happy that we won and happy to be on the scoresheet as well."
