What's happening in the Serie A title fight?

Ten games into the Serie A season and the only thing those who made their season predictions are more than likely right about is how close things are at the top of the table.

No team has managed to retain their league championship for the past five seasons, and what's evident from the opening exchanges of the campaign is that it's almost impossible to call who will be champions in 2026.

Reigning champions Napoli lead the way before this weekend's action, but there is just a point separating the top four, and opinion has already gone back and forth on who's best equipped to lift the trophy this season.

Can Conte do it again?

Leading the way, albeit but the slimmest of margins, are Napoli, who were the favourites going into the season and whose recruitment over the summer only added to their billing, but they've been far from convincing.

Kevin De Bruyne's arrival was seen as a shrewd move, and why not, when you're adding one of the game's best creators? However, although the Belgian has made an impact, it's presented a difficult balance for Antonio Conte to juggle in a midfield that worked so well last season.

Scott McTominay, last season's Player of the Year, has seen his role slightly tweaked and for the early part of the campaign, as Napoli lost to Milan, there were concerns over how best to fit all the names into the middle of the park.

Injuries have also hampered the champions. After losing Romelu Lukaku in pre-season, they've also been without Lobokata and Rasmus Hojlund for periods, while ironically, De Bruyne's injury came just as the midfield was beginning to function.

The win over Inter last month was a big boost, as has been the form of Frank Anguissa, but there's still some work to do if they are to win back-to-back titles.

Who's leading the chasing pack?

The answer is no one right now, as each time it looks like a team is going to take a handle on the league, there's a twist that brings everyone clustered back together once again.

Milan lost on the opening day of the season but has yet to suffer a defeat since and without the distraction of European football, have at times looked most likely to challenge the champions. The return of Max Allegri has helped settle the Rossoneri, while the signing of Luka Modric has been arguably the best bit of business any club did over the summer.

Yet, despite the win over Napoli, they've dropped needless points in recent weeks and club legend Ruud Gullit isn't convinced by their championship credentials.

"Milan, I don't know if they can," he exclusively told DAZN News, courtesy of Video Gamer.

"There are a lot of teams that are not at their best at the moment. I think that Inter have done really well in the last couple of years. Also, Juventus are struggling as well. Also, Roma, there's a lot of teams that are struggling.

"Therefore, it's a little bit strange at the moment in Italy. I still think that Italian teams can play some good football.

"Also, with Milan, they’ve got new owners, which doesn't help. They will have different views on players, so therefore that's also a project. Maybe we will have to wait for a while to see what's going on."

Gullit mentions the other contenders in the top four, with Roma perhaps exceeding expectations but failing to capitalise on their form by losing to both Milan clubs when a win would have really put them into the driving seat.

As for Juventus, they've already diverted course following Igor Tudor's disappointing start, replacing the Croatian with Luciano Spalletti, so he could find the magic that saw him lead Napoli to a title win in 2023 and make Juve champions again?

Or is it more likely we'll see a shootout between last season's top two repeated this campaign?

Inter in the groove

Inter began their season somewhat erratically, suffering early losses to Udinese at the San Siro and in the derby against Juventus.

However, they soon found some form, winning seven straight games in all competitions, with a frontline full of goals even without the injured Marcus Thuram.

They then ran into Napoli, who saved their best performance of the season so far for the meeting between the two title challengers, but that defeat hasn't seemed to derail Christian Chiuv's men.

The Nerazzurri remain just a point off the top, while in the Champions League, they've won four games out of four so far.

Right now, it looks as though a repeat tussle at the top between Napoli and Inter is on the cards, but there's still plenty of time for the chasing pack to stake their claim, too.
