Pop quiz: Who is the youngest undisputed world champion in boxing history?
The distinction belongs to none other than Gabriela Fundora who became the undisputed flyweight queen of the ring at just 22 years old with her seventh-round destruction of Gabriela Celeste Alaniz in November 2024.
That immediately brings us to DAZN News’ ninth New Year’s Resolution for boxing in 2026.
At 5-foot-9 with nearly 70 inches of reach, Fundora’s ability to rain down on opponents with stiff power shots is a stunning sight to behold.
Whether she is shattering opponents’ guards with splitting, piercing output, wrapping hooks around their defense toward explosive results, or getting vicious on the inside, ‘Sweet Poison’ has undeniable skills of a boxing star. No movement is wasted in her power stance, her output razor-sharp.
It is time to lift that star power into orbit. There is no better way for the 23-year-old sensation, and younger sister of WBC super welterweight champ Sebastian Fundora, to do that than making her footprints across divisions.
With time on her side, Fundora has openly talked about moving down to 108 pounds and attempting to snatch hardware there. The junior flyweight division has Evelyn Bermudez in possession of three titles and Lourdes Juarez as the WBC champ.
Perhaps a big money catchweight fight with Yokasta Valle can be made as well. Valle is a battle-tested star in her own right and current WBC strawweight champ.
Fundora has the frame and mouthwatering skills to look north in the near future if she desires to as well as super flyweight would mark just a three-pound increase and bantamweight six pounds more than the 112-pound division she is currently ruling over. Bantamweight touts an undisputed champion as well in Cherneka Johnson, while Ellie Scotney is unified with three titles at the super bantamweight of 122 pounds.
Whether it is climbing up or cutting weight down, Fundora has delivered three straight pulverizing knockouts at flyweight, defending her crown twice last year in a pair of scintillating seventh-round TKOs of Marilyn Badillo Amaya and Alexas Kubicki in April and September, respectively.
Those eye-opening displays of fireworks flexed Fundora’s dominance at flyweight and should give her all the more incentive to make moves outside of the division soon.
It is time she grows that star power across weight classes. She does not have to necessarily relinquish her undisputed titles to do so, either.
Fundora has the youth and ability to move up and down divisions, take names and titles the way she has been doing. Golden Boy Promotions has an absolute pound-for-pound superstar in the making with Fundora who can put the boxing world on further notice this year of how potent her ‘Sweet Poison’ can be.
