Callum Simpson and Ivan Zucco made weight this afternoon for their forthcoming fight this weekend.
The pair, who are set to meet in a vacant European super-middleweight championship fight at Oakwell Football Ground in Barnsley, both scaled 165lbs ahead of the bout – each three pounds under the weight limit of 168lbs.
Simpson said that he had purposefully trained to come in beneath the limit, saying that he had trained for ‘many, many’ months to get down to well below 12 stone for the fight.
The fight between the Italian Zucco, 21-0 (18), and Simpson, 17-0 (12), will be for the title vacated by Kevin Lele Sadjo.
Lele Sadjo, it is understood, relinquished the belt in order to chase an IBF eliminator bout with Christian Mbilli. However, Mbilli is now slated to face Maciej Sulecki on 27 June in Quebec City, Canada.
Now, the EBU title will be decided this weekend in Barnsley.
Zucco comes into the bout following a TKO win over Kasim Gashi in December. That was held in Locarno, Switzerland, but Zucco has rarely left Italy across the remainder of his career. Until recently, his fights were mostly held in Milan and Verbania.
Simpson, meanwhile, comes into the fight following a TKO win over Elvis Ahorgah at Wembley Arena in February. Prior to that, Simpson had a stoppage win over Steed Woodall in Sheffield in January.
According to BoxRec, the pair are currently ranked #6 (Simpson) and #15 (Zucco) within Europe at super-middleweight. Top-ranked is Christian Mbilli, who is French, followed by Hamzah Sheeraz, who fights on DAZN in a few weeks, Lele Sadjo, and Luka Plantic.
