Former light heavyweight champion and current heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones is stepping back into the Octagon when he faces off with former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic on Nov. 16 in New York City.
Jones, dubbed the GOAT by UFC president Dana White, is fighting for legacy as he takes on the most decorated UFC champion of all time. The fight has been years in the making and is finally coming to fruition. The pair were originally scheduled to fight on Nov. 11, 2023, but an injury to Jones forced him out of the bout and an interim title fight was held in its place.
Jones hasn't fought since he defeated Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023.
Miocic has been out even longer. He hasn't seen the inside of an Octagon since his loss to Francis Ngannou in March 2021.
There's plenty of controversy surrounding this matchup, including the age and inactivity of Miocic and Jones' refusal to unify the heavyweight title with interim champion Tom Aspinall, who has defended his interim title in the time Jones was away.
There's also controversy surrounding what happens next. Jones and Miocic are expected to retire after UFC 309, leaving Aspinall without a next opponent. Should Jones continue, he's already voiced his thoughts on Aspinall and refuses to fight him next.
A lot is riding on UFC 309 and plenty of questions will need to be answered come Saturday night.
The main card is set for 10 p.m. ET on Saturday night. With four fights scheduled before the main event, we can likely expect the main event to begin around midnight, depending on how long the fights before go.
Main Card (10 p.m. ET)
Preliminary Card (8 p.m. ET)
Early Preliminary Card (6 p.m. ET)
The fight will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This is the same venue where the fight was scheduled one year prior.
