Known informally amongst tennis fans as the "fifth major," the BNP Paribas Open (a.k.a. Indian Wells Masters) boasts a "Who's Who" of the top players on the WTA Tour.
With 19 of the top 20 ranked players taking part in the tournament, the level of competition is as high as it can be. Led by world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, the elite of the women's tennis world compete for a share of the $8.8 million (U.S.) purse.
Canadian fans will have local rooting interests at the competition, as former Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu is seeded alongside compatriot Leylah Fernandez. They'll receive a bye into the round of 32, but fellow Canuck Rebecca Marino is entered in the earlier rounds and will have to navigate her way through a longer path.
