These two teams are no strangers to each other on the sport’s biggest stage. They last met in Super Bowl XLIX back in February 2015, when Tom Brady led the Patriots to a dramatic 28-24 victory. Eleven years on, the Seahawks return with a chance to settle the score.

New England, the AFC champions once again, are back in the Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl LIII in 2019, when they defeated the Los Angeles Rams.

Their return was sealed with a hard-fought 10–7 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. The Patriots are now chasing what would be a record seventh Lombardi Trophy, and their first in the post-Tom Brady era.

Seattle, meanwhile, makes its first Super Bowl appearance since that defeat to New England. The Seahawks finished as the NFC’s No. 1 seed and booked their place in Santa Clara with a thrilling 31–27 win over the Rams in the NFC Conference Championship Game.

They arrive in red-hot form and with unfinished business on their minds.

Super Bowl LX: Players to watch

New England Patriots

Offense

The headline act is obvious. Drake Maye, in just his second NFL season, has gone from rookie quarterback to the face of a franchise reborn. Calm, aggressive, and unflustered by pressure, Maye has thrived in Josh McDaniels' offensive scheme, showing poise well beyond his years.

After throwing 31 touchdowns and completing 72% of his passes, Maye finds himself locked in a two-horse battle with Matthew Stafford for the league MVP award.

The 23-year-old can also add chunk yardage with his legs - a point most evident in the wins over the Chargers and Broncos in recent games.

Maye is supported by a versatile group of pass-catchers. Veteran Stefon Diggs remains the security blanket in key moments, Kayshon Boutte provides vertical juice, and tight end Hunter Henry continues to be a red-zone mismatch.

Balance, however, is what truly defines this Patriots offense. And in that sense, they have a battering ram at tailback in Rhamondre Stevenson.

New England have faced three top-10 defenses during their playoff run, which may explain why Henderson's average yards per carry has dropped since the regular season. That said, any suggestion that he isn't earning the hard yards is misplaced, as he leads all tailbacks in yards after contact and forced missed tackles during the postseason.

Defense

It shouldn't come as a surprise that a team led by Mike Vrabel - a former linebacker who won three rings with the Patriots - is loaded with difference-makers on the defensive side of the ball.

It starts up front, where defensive tackles Milton Williams and Christian Barmore have been instrumental in helping this unit dominate against the run in the postseason, holding opponents to a combined 3.1 yards per carry. That's the lowest figure allowed by any team during any postseason run in the last four years.

On the edge, K'Lavon Chaisson - a late bloomer after being picked in the first round of the 2020 draft - continues to show up big, adding three postseason sacks to the 7.5 he managed during the regular-season.

There's talent to spare at cornerback, too, where cornerback Christian Gonzalez can erase top receivers, and Carlton Davis gives New England the flexibility to disguise coverages.

Also in the secondary is Marcus Jones, who, in addition to registering a sack, forced fumble, and interception during the Patriots' playoff run, poses a threat as a dangerous returner on special teams.

Seattle Seahawks

Offense

Mike Macdonald has wasted no time establishing a winning culture. The rapid turnaround has undoubtedly been driven by the defense, but Seattle’s offense has found a timely rhythm when needed.

Quarterback Sam Darnold has played efficient, mistake-free football during the postseason. His defining moment came in the shootout against the Rams in the NFC Conference Championship Game, when he delivered a superb three-touchdown performance.

Darnold's supporting cast is an enviable group of standouts. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has enjoyed a sensational season, earning the receiving title and becoming a frontrunner for the Offensive Player of the Year award in the process.

Old-hand Cooper Kupp knows what it takes to win on the big stage, having earned the game MVP award in Super Bowl LVI with the Rams. His route-running savvy is the perfect complement to the deep threat posed by speedster and special teams ace Rashid Shaheed - one of the game's biggest X-factors.

No account of the Seahawks' offense would be complete without mentioning tailback Kenneth Walker III, whose speed and ability to make defenders miss have carried Seattle's ground game admirably in the absence of the injured Zach Charbonnet.

Defense

Defensively, Seattle is as good as it gets. English defensive coordinator Aden Durde has engineered the league’s most effective unit, one that leads the NFL in fewest points allowed at 17.2 per game

Byron Murphy, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Leonard Williams set the tone on the defensive line, collapsing pockets and creating havoc in the backfield.

Captain Ernest Jones is the enforcer at linebacker, roaming the middle of the field and collecting tackles at an incredible rate. He has also been a difference-maker in pass defense, leading the team in interceptions.

Cornerback Devon Witherspoon and rookie sensation Nick Emmanwori are among the best at their position, ensuring that all three levels of this unit have what it takes to make life miserable for even the league's best offenses.

Super Bowl LX: Notable injury news

Updated throughout the week.

New England Patriots

The main concern is Drake Maye's shoulder injury, sustained in the third quarter of the Patriots' win over the Broncos. Maye has downplayed concerns, telling reporters "I’m feeling good and ready to go for the Super Bowl."

In addition to Maye's injury, we'll also monitor and provide updates on edge rusher Harold Landry (knee) and linebacker Robert Spillane (ankle).

Seattle Seahawks

Sam Darnold's oblique has been nagging him throughout the postseason, but it didn't appear to hold him back against the Rams in the Conference Championship Game.

Others currently on the injury report include linebacker Ernest Jones (chest), offensive tackle Charles Cross (foot), and safety Julian Love (shoulder).

Super Bowl LX: Keys to the game

  • Maye vs Macdonald’s disguises: How quickly Maye diagnoses coverage will shape the passing game.
  • Patriots run defense: New England has been excellent against the run all postseason. Limiting Walker forces Seattle into longer third downs.
  • Which version of Darnold shows up?: Will it be the efficient Darnold we saw last week or the interception-prone version we saw at times earlier in the year?
  • Coaching chess match: Vrabel’s situational mastery against Macdonald’s defensive creativity could decide this late.
  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba vs Patriots' secondary: JSN can flip a game on its head in the blink of an eye. Gonzalez and Co. have the talent to reduce his impact, but we've said that before about other top-tier corners.
  • Explosive special teams: In Marcus Jones and Rashid Shaheed, each side has a player capable of going the distance any time they have the ball in their hands.
  • OL vs DL for both: Both teams know how to get after the quarterback. The Pats lead all teams in postseason sacks; the Seahawks tied for seventh in the regular season. How each team's offensive line performs could have a large bearing on the game's outcome.

Super Bowl LX prediction

New England’s balance, combined with Maye’s composure and Vrabel’s knack for big-game moments, makes this feel like a Patriots performance built for the fourth quarter.

But Seattle’s defense is fast, physical, and built to win games like this. If they control the line of scrimmage and force Maye into obvious passing situations, the Seahawks have a real path to victory.

Seahawks 27 - 23 Patriots
