Thanksgiving week marks the continuation of the “My Cause My Cleats” campaign, as players showcase their newest custom footwear.
Now in its tenth year, the initiative gives NFL players, coaches, and staff the chance to showcase creatively designed cleats to help drive meaningful change in support of important causes and nonprofit organisations.
Debuting in Week 12 and worn through Week 13, the footwear features logos and designs chosen to raise awareness for causes close to each player’s heart.
Over 1,800 members of the NFL family, and the NFL itself, auction off cleats and other memorabilia, with proceeds going to the respective charities. Additionally, fans will be able to donate to players' causes without bidding on cleats, should they choose.
The initiative dates back to 2013, when Brandon Marshall wore a special pair of cleats in support of mental health awareness, planting the seed for what would eventually become a league-wide movement.
"Our players are passionate supporters of many charitable causes and serve as changemakers in their communities," said commissioner Roger Goodell.
"We are excited to build upon last year's success and work with our players to expand this unique platform that enables them to raise awareness for causes they support," he added.
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is among the many taking part, wearing a pair of cleats in support of the MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital.
