Adam Azim is looking to follow in the footsteps of British boxing legend Amir Khan and leave a legacy both inside and outside the ring.
Azim returns to action on Saturday night as a part of the undercard for Chris Eubank Jr.’s rematch with Conor Benn, exclusively live on DAZN.
Taking place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Azim will face the dangerous American Kurt Scoby, who has been knocking out his opponents with ease as of late.
At just 23 years old, a lot of pressure has been placed on the shoulders of Adam Azim to be one of, if not the next face of British boxing.
With the careers of Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and even Eubank Jr. slowly coming to an end, a new generation of British boxing stars are breaking through, and Azim is at the forefront of it.
Azim’s Pakistani heritage has made him a popular figure with a passionate fanbase present in whatever arena he fights in, and the undefeated super lightweight is hoping he can use this notoriety to good effect and benefit future generations.
“It’s massive. Being a British Pakistani, I want to help the community,” Azim told DAZN News.
“Getting kids to box, getting kids off the street, it doesn’t necessarily have to be boxing; it can be anything.”
In the past, Azim has expressed his desire to build a chain of boxing gyms in areas affected by knife crime, and if he fulfils his potential and enjoys a meteoric rise, then anything is possible.
But all this would not be possible for Khan. An Olympic medallist in 2004, Khan played a major part in the revival of British boxing in the early noughties. His success in Athens saw boxing being taken more seriously in the amateurs and paving the way for the likes of Anthony Joshua, James DeGale, and Natasha Jonas to succeed before turning professional.
In the words of Azim, Khan’s success ‘opened the doors’ for many prospects like him to excel in the sweet science.
“When Amir Khan used to box, he gave us the torch, the pathway forward for Pakistani boxers to come through, and it’s not just Pakistani boxers, Amir Khan opened a lot of doors around the world.”
Azim is not one to trash-talk or make outlandish comments. His grounded and measured nature is evident, albeit virtually on a Zoom call, and it is vital for someone his age and at a vital part of his career.
With marquee matchups and world title shots not far away, there will be some who will want to have their slice of the Azim pie, but the 23-year-old has put the measures in place to keep his team small and consist of those who care about him most.
His family are at the centre of it whenever Azim speaks about them, there is a real warmth from someone who appreciates the support they provide.
“It’s good, having my father and the right people there all the time, it’s great,” Azim said.
“You never know when someone bad might come into your life, when you’ve got good advisors and good people around you, this is what having a small team is good for.”
Whether Azim can replicate, or better the career of Khan, will not be known for several years, but all these expectations and future plans could come crumbling down if he does not deliver against Scoby on Saturday night.
But while there is a lot of hype surrounding Azim and what he can achieve, he is one of the rare fighters whose team can block out the noise and allow him to do what he does best inside the ring.
