Daniel Dubois has officially split with coach Don Charles after suffering a second stoppage defeat to Oleksandr Usyk a month ago.

The former IBF champion issued a statement on Instagram thanking Charles for his services, but said he was ready for a change ahead of his comeback.

The statement from Dubois read: “I want to take this moment to thank Don Charles and his team for all the time, effort, and hard work they’ve put into me over the past 18 months. I’m truly grateful for everything. That said, I feel it’s time for a change, a fresh approach for the next phase of my career, as I push forward to become a 2x heavyweight champion of the world. God bless."

He added: “I’ll be making a further announcement regarding my new team structure very soon.”

Dubois began his relationship with Charles in 2023 before his first meeting with Usyk for the unified heavyweight titles.

He would go on to lose via knockout, but Charles directed an impressive resurgence of Dubois’s career – beating Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua on his way to becoming the IBF heavyweight champion.

Controversy would follow as a leaked party at the Dubois residence hours before his undisputed title clash last month brought up serious questions over Dubois’ team.

Charles defended his fighter, saying that they had done the same thing before his career-best victory against Anthony Joshua and so felt it should be repeated for the biggest fight of his career.

Speaking to The Times about the split, Charles said they parted ways on “good terms, no ill feelings.”

Only last week, Kieran Farrell, Dubois’ assistant coach, announced his departure from the team, which would turn out to be the writing on the wall for big changes in team Dubois.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Dubois had teamed up with world champion trainer Tony Sims to get back to a world title.

Sims has trained other big names such as Darren Barker, Joe Cordina, Ricky Burns and Conor Benn. He also just took on another young, ambitious heavyweight, Johnny Fisher, who is orchestrating a comeback of his own after his defeat to Dave Allen in May.
