Eddie Hearn stated that he's "not going to the presser" for the upcoming Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn rematch, despite representing the latter.
Eubank and Benn are set to step into the ring together in November, a rematch of their April bout that drew massive attention due to the fighters' familial connections and rivalry. In the build-up to the first fight, the rivals engaged in a war of words that turned physical when Eubank slapped an egg into Benn's face during the launch press conference, for which Eubank earned a six-figure fine.
But Eubank's ire in the weeks leading up to the first Benn fight was not only reserved for his opponent, as he also sent verbal jabs at Matchroom boss Hearn whenever he could. In the press conferences and public appearances that Eubank and Hearn shared a stage, Eubank would often talk over the promoter, hurling insults Hearn's way and not allowing him to speak uninterrupted.
Hearn said it's the risk of this happening again at next week's launch press conference for Eubank Jr. vs Benn II that led him to make the decision to skip the media event altogether — which would be highly unusual for one of the lead promoters of the fight.
"I'm not doing it," Hearn told IFL TV when asked about his plan for avoiding interruption by Eubank. "I'm not going to the presser.
"What's the point in going the the presser? He won't let me speak."
Whether Hearn is serious about actually missing the press conference will be answered in time, but it's likely that the build-up to Eubank Jr. vs Benn II will be emotionally charged.
