The big match this past weekend on DAZN was the long-awaited fight between IBO champion Anthony Cacace and former champion Leigh Wood in Nottingham.
That fight ended in the ninth round when Wood’s corner threw in the towel. Wood, who spoke last week about his long-term fears over the nature of the sport, now seems to be headed towards retirement after such a heavy loss at the age of 36.
Elsewhere on the Nottingham card, there were no surprises on the night. Liam Davies took a unanimous decision (115-113, 116-112, 117-111) over Kurt Walker for the vacant IBF intercontinental featherweight title. That fight, which took place over twelve rounds, saw Walker pick up the first defeat of his career, moving to 12-1 (2). Davies, meanwhile, moved to 17-1 (8).
At light-heavyweight, Ezra Taylor went a tough ten rounds against Troy Jones, 12-1 (6). It was a match between the mouthy Taylor and a man he considered inferior. Taylor now moves to 12-0 (8) and will be looking for a match between himself and Lewie Edmondson, 11-0 (3), whom he insulted during the buildup.
And… finally on the undercard were the debuts of four fighters: Harris Akbar, Joe Tyers, Huey Malone, and Charlie Senior. All four won on points against overmatched opposition.
There was other action this weekend on DAZN.
On Friday 9 May (but broadcast early in the morning on Saturday), Andreas Katzourakis met Roberto Cruz in a fight from the famous Red Owl Boxing Arena in Houston, Texas. A technical knockout in the seventh round saw Katzourakis move his record to 16-0 (11).
Also on the Houston card was a super-lightweight bout between Breyon Gorham, 18-0 (15), and Luis Feliciano, 17-2 (8); a lightweight fight between Oscar Alan Perez, 12-0-2 (7), and Cesar Juarez, 31-18 (24); and another super-lightweight fight between Giovanni Marquez, 12-0 (6), and Esteban Munoz, 10-4 (5).
Gorham won his fight over Feliciano by unanimous decision over ten rounds, while Perez won a similar decision but over eight rounds against Cesar Juarez. The fight between Marquez and Munoz also ended in a unanimous decision over eight rounds, but for Marquez.
Over in the sunshine state, the Cuban Dainier Pero moved his record to 11-0 (8) with a unanimous decision over the Mexican Cesar Navarro, now 13-3 (11). There were a few surprises, though, as the southpaw Pero went down twice in round three, narrowly avoiding a stoppage before being able to get back to his feet and outpoint his foe. Final scores on that one were 96-92 on all three cards, although it looked to be a tough, drawn-out battle.
Elsewhere, lightweight Corey Marksman (what a surname for a fighter!) stopped Tayden Beltran in seven rounds. Both fighters were undefeated going into the bout. Marksman moves to 11-0-1 (8), while Beltran’s record now stands at 10-1-1 (5). Likewise, fellow lightweight Kaipos Gallegos won on a retirement in the sixth round over Pedro Castaneda Castro, going to 9-0-1 (7) while his opponent left at 8-1-1 (5). Again, both fighters were undefeated going into that bout.
