Boxing analyst Max Kellerman has revealed why Terence Crawford has a strong argument for having a better legacy than Floyd Mayweather.
Crawford outpointed Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas on Saturday night to become a five-weight world champion – a feat also achieved by Mayweather.
Both men have also never lost in a professional ring and have 92 wins between them, which has sparked a debate over who the superior fighter is.
Kellerman, who called Crawford’s win over Canelo from ringside for Netflix, believes the new super middleweight king could have the edge over Mayweather due to his willingness to fight anyone at any time.
“Floyd picked and chose when he fought guys, especially once he left lightweight,” Kellerman told Inside The Ring.Jeff Bottari/TKO Worldwide LLC via Getty Images
“He wiped out the junior lightweights, bring them. Lightweight, he jumps up to fight Jose Luis Castillo, first thing, a lot of people think he lost that fight, I didn’t. But then he won the rematch.
“But once he left lightweight, he was careful about when he fought guys. So, even though his resume is deeper with names, people remember he didn’t want it with certain dudes at certain times.
“Crawford, we all witnessed, even though the resume is thin in certain ways, he wanted it with everyone the whole time. That makes a difference to people.”
Crawford, who will turn 38 later this month, has had to wait for his career-defining fights, but has dispatched Errol Spence and Canelo in the last two years to prove his greatness.
Mayweather holds victories over some of the biggest names the sport has seen in the 21st century, including Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, but has been accused of waiting for both men to move beyond their peak years before facing them.
Crawford has hinted that he could retire from the sport following his win over Canelo, leaving him with an unblemished 42-0 record.
This would be eight wins fewer than Mayweather, which may count against him when weighing up their respective resumes.
However, he could opt to continue boxing and drop down to middleweight to try and win a title in a sixth weight class. This would be something that Mayweather failed to achieve, and may strengthen his claim to being the greater boxer when their final legacies are assessed.
