Garcia vs Romero: Rolly Romero stunningly reveals how boxing saved his life
An emotional Rolly Romero has exclusively revealed how boxing “saved my life” as he prepares to fight Ryan Garcia in a blockbuster welterweight clash on Friday night.
Taking place in New York's Times Square, Garcia, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez will contest in three separate bouts, while the following day Canelo Alvarez makes his Riyadh debut against William Scull. Both fight nights are exclusively on DAZN PPV.
Romero hails from downtown Las Vegas and has already realised one dream by fighting in his home city – but now he will take centre stage in Times Square.
It is another reminder of how far Romero has risen from his humble upbringing on the wrong side of the tracks in Sin City.
In an exclusive sit-down interview with DAZN, Romero said: “It’s crazy. In Vegas, they put my face on the billboard of Circa.
“I’m driving to go and run in the mountains and, as I go to pick up my Pops (father), we’re hopping on the freeway and I just see my face was on Circa.
“But I’m from downtown Vegas and this casino has me [on it]?
“It’s crazy. I come from downtown Vegas which is the worst part of Vegas, especially at the time when I grew up.
“To be blessed about how far I truly made it and, statistically speaking, I should be doing something else right now and something I don’t want to even be speaking about on camera.
“I should be a completely different person but look at this, I’m headlining Times Square.

“I’m a motivation to the youth, to so many people and I’m a vibrant personality in the boxing world.
“I’ve got to thank God for all my blessings because I could have gone a different way but ended up doing this. Boxing saved my life.”
Romero said he was in confident mood as he prepares to take on Garcia and backed himself to win comfortably.
When asked how he saw the fight unfolding, Romero replied: “Ryan Garcia flatlined on the canvas.”
Romero’s clash with Garcia headlines a huge bill which also sees Haney take on Jose Ramirez and Lopez face Arnold Barboza Jr for the WBO light-welterweight world title.
Romero added: “They’re all tough fights. Ramirez is an Olympian, he’s coming up, and let’s see how Devin Haney fares.
“Barboza wants to chop off Teo’s head and Ryan Garcia against me – I’m arguably the hardest hitter in my weight division.”
