Fresh off of having his one-year suspension from a failed drug test lifted, Ryan Garcia returns to action to face a stern test in Rolando Romero .
Garcia (24-1 with 1 no contest, 20 KOs) clashes with Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) in The Ring's Fatal Fury: Times Square main event in New York City on Friday night, and live and exclusively on DAZN PPV.
A win and Garcia can force a rematch with Devin Haney if the latter is successful against Jose Ramirez in the event's co-feature.
With the stakes ultra high, DAZN News analyzes who has the edge across three key categories in Garcia vs. Romero.
Something has got to give when the lightning-quick hands of Garcia clashes with the more measured, methodical style of Romero.
“King Ry” peppering Romero with shots early could give him the green light to sit on that vaunted left hook that he detonates with so much explosion.
On the other hand, a willingness to counterpunch in traffic could allow the heavy-handed “Rolly” to catch an unexpecting Garcia with a fight-changing punch.
This was one is close but the slight advantage goes to Garcia.
Just a couple of months ago, Gervonta “Tank” Davis commented that of all the opponents he has faced, Romero hits the hardest . So, the power is clearly there.
That said, Garcia’s left hook is special. It is electric.
If it connects flush, Romero could find himself in a world of trouble.
These two are far from strangers, having sparred before with Romero promising that both sessions went his way.
If there is an edge in mental warfare, it could be that Garcia is faced with the pressure to defeat Romero handily in a statement win that would usher in a rematch with Devin Haney if the latter is successful in Friday night’s co-main event against Jose Ramirez.
Romero does not have that pressure. Or any for that matter.
More is weighing on the shoulders of Garcia following his return from a one-year suspension after failing a drug test following his drubbing of Haney last April.
Could this be the opening Romero needs to get the win?
The boxing world is about to find out.
By our count, it’s a 2-1 edge in favor of Garcia in this main event.
Certainly, the pressure to deliver a rousing performance and statement win in attempt to land that rematch with Haney can give Romero an opening to victory.
But that same pressure can also lead Garcia to make an example out of “Rolly” and put Haney — and boxing — on notice.
