Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has compared Mikel Arteta's Arsenal to the Wimbledon "Crazy Gang" of the 1980s and 1990s.

Ahead of the Red Devils' upcoming match against the Gunners this weekend, Parker likened Arsenal to the infamous side that he came up against during his own playing days.

Parker chided Arteta for building a side more focused on physicality than finesse, and also question the Arsenal manager's priorities in terms of developing the club's talented youngsters.

“Arsenal aren’t renowned for bringing through young players, although it is ironic that [Ethan] Nwaneri and [Myles] Lewis-Skelly have come through since," Parker told bettingexpert.com. "Arteta woke up and smelt the coffee.

“There was no point in them signing [Riccardo] Calafiori when they had Lewis-Skelly sitting there ready to play. Skelly has the same body shape and mould that Ashley Cole had, but Arteta wanted another 6'3" centre-half to win headers instead. Arsenal are a modern and expensive Wimbledon team—it’s just height and power.

“Arteta is supposed to be a student of Pep Guardiola. A student of football. Not a student of knocking down brick walls.”
