It was a bittersweet end to the match for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Georginio Rutter, who scored the tying goal in stoppage time as the Seagulls drew 1-1 with visiting West Ham United on Sunday.

Brighton dominated the ball throughout the match, with 65 percent possession and a shot advantage of 23-14 over the Hammers. However, the London club nearly escaped the Amex with a victory after Jarrod Bowen struck in the 73rd minute to break the deadlock.

That set up the dramatic Rutter goal in the first minute of added time, securing a point for the hosts. And while the 23-year-old is glad to have put his name on the scoresheet, he felt that Brighton let themselves down by not claiming all three points.

"It feels amazing for the first goal for the season," Rutter told Sky Sports after the match. "I am very happy but we only take one point so that is frustrating.

"I think West Ham are very good and they are very compact. We were waiting for them to make a mistake. We didn't score in the first half and we have a lot of chances but we scored in the end.

"We are a good group, so we have to keep going."

There was initially some doubt as to whether Rutter's equaliser would stand, as the VAR took a long look at a potential handball infraction in the lead-up to the goal. Fortunately for Brighton, any contact between Rutter's arm and the ball was considered incidental, and the goal was allowed.

Rutter expressed relief in the officials' decision, and also noted that he has been trying to get himself closer to goal — a strategy that paid off Sunday.

"At the goal I was confused and scared about the VAR," he said. "Normally, I am too far away from the box, so I have been training and it's paid off today."
