Michael Owen has voiced his support for Alexander Isak's desire to leave Newcastle and join reigning Premier League champions Liverpool.

Isak has been ordered to train alone after returning to Tyneside, after making it known that he would like to leave the club and join Arne Slot's side.

As someone who represented both clubs, former England striker Owen says he understands Isak's desire to further his career and have the opportunity to win more silverware with the Reds.

"When I was a player, I always pushed to better myself and to try to play in the best team possible," he exclusively told DAZN News, thanks to askgamblers.com

"It was never about money; it was always about trying to play in a certain team or trying to get as much out of your career as possible.

"If Isak feels that he’s got a better chance of winning the league and winning the Champions League playing in red than he does in black and white, bear in mind, he's not Geordie, he's not brought up in the area, he’s got no emotional attachment from that point of view.

"He's not from this country; his only attachment is to himself, for his family, to try to do the best for everybody, and to have a great career. I can totally see why, from his point of view.

"As I said, there’s no deep-rooted attachment from being a five-year-old joining the club. There’s nothing like that."

Isak's possible arrival could be the icing on the cake for Liverpool in a summer where they've made major moves in reshaping their squad ahead of their title defence.

Slot has recruited Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz this summer, and Owen is excited about their business, especially the record signing of Wirtz.

"I've been really surprised at the amount of business Liverpool have done. I thought they'd buy two or three players, maybe get rid of one or two, but it's been big changes, virtually in every position," he added.

"A new goalkeeper has come in, a new right-back, a new left-back. There’ve been attacking players galore. Wirtz, you could say, is a midfield/attacking player.

"There are half a dozen players off the top of my head already who’ve come in, and it sounds like they’re still in the market. So, I’m really surprised at the amount of business. It’s very exciting for the fans, I guess.

"In terms of being excited, I think Kerkez is a very good signing at left-back. I think he’s turned a lot of heads during his time at Bournemouth.

"But I think Wirtz, that’s the marquee signing, and I think everyone’s excited to see him. Young, talented, he comes with a huge reputation, and I think it’s going to be fascinating to see how he does.

"He literally could be anything. He could be the Player of the Year in the Premier League if things go his way."
