'Just the start' - Alexander Isak expects big reception in Newcastle following Carabao Cup triumph

Alexander Isak scored the match-winner for Newcastle United on Sunday, as the Magpies ended their decades-long trophy drought by defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final.

It was a justified victory for Newcastle, who spent more time attacking than their opponents. Dan Burn scored the game's opening goal at the stroke of half-time before Isak doubled the advantage in the 52nd minute.

Federico Chiesa made things interesting in second-half stoppage time with a goal for Liverpool, but that was all the Reds could muster as Newcastle secured their first major trophy since 1955.

As expected, the Newcastle fans in attendance at Wembley Stadium were in raptures and all remained to celebrate with the players long after the final whistle. But Isak believes the party will really start when the team returns to Newcastle.

"This is really just the start," Isak told Sky Sports. "We will see more from the fans and what it means for the people when we get back to Newcastle.

"We are all aware of how long it's been for the fans without a trophy."

Despite his side creating more than double the chances than Liverpool, Isak admitted that it took him a while to get into the form that has made him one of the Premier League's most feared attackers this season.

Finally breaking through in the second half was a relief for the 25-year-old.

"This game is about moments and it's not about being really good as a striker but it's about being there to score when needed," Isak said.

"The first half was a bit frustrating for me but I kept telling myself my moment would come.

"When you've been without a trophy for so long it can be in the back of your head but no hopefully we have won this it is bright days in front of us."
