Arsenal pulled to within two points of Premier League-leading Liverpool thanks to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United at St. James' Park, and Mikel Arteta believes it is performances like the one by the Gunners on Sunday that will serve them well in their title chase.
The Magpies defended stoutly and claimed a first-half goal against the run of play through Nick Woltemade, but Arsenal's attacking pressure was immense throughout the match and eventually paid off as Mikel Merino scored against his former team in the 84th minute and defender Gabriel struck the match-winner in stoppage time.
Gabriel's late goal capped off a thoroughly entertaining match at Newcastle's home ground, which has recently been anything but an inviting place for the North Londoners.
However, Arteta felt that his side "fully deserved the win" and said Arsenal will learn a lot about themselves from the victory, which catapulted the Gunners back into second place after several teams charged ahead of them a day earlier.
"The way we played and performed and competed, the chances we generated, we deserved to win," the Arsenal manager told Sky Sports immediately after the final whistle. "We did it in a dramatic way but we deserved to win.
"That is how you get to a different level. By going through those moments and taking those lessons from it. It was a massive opportunity to show who we are. For ourselves because they are a terrific team and they are so difficult to play against. The level of consistency and quality we showed today was top.
"I think the way we played. The courage, the determination and the quality we played with today. We want to achieve the next level and to do that you have to come to these places and when there are some results yesterday, we wanted to show that conviction and desire to do it.
"You have to come to this place and you have to win. You have to find a way to do it and it was tremendous."
