Reliving the 'Remontada' as Barcelona and PSG meet again in the Champions League

When Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain step onto the pitch again on Wednesday night in the Champions League group stage, the fixture will inevitably evoke memories of one of football’s most unforgettable nights.

The two clubs have met plenty of times across the modern Champions League era, but for neutrals and supporters alike, their pairing is synonymous with the famous “Remontada” of March 2017.

Barcelona’s 6-1 victory at Camp Nou, which overturned a 4-0 deficit from the first leg at the Parc des Princes, remains not only the defining clash between these two clubs but one of the greatest comebacks in the entire history of the competition.

The context heading into that second leg in 2017 was bleak for Barcelona. Unai Emery’s PSG had demolished them in Paris, with Angel Di María scoring twice and Julian Draxler and Edinson Cavani adding the others.

It was billed as the night PSG finally arrived at the top table of European football, while Luis Enrique’s Barcelona looked like an empire in decline. No team had ever recovered from such a deficit in the Champions League era. The second leg, in theory, was supposed to be little more than a formality.

Instead, what unfolded under the floodlights at Camp Nou was something bordering on the surreal. Luis Suarez’s early header provided a glimmer of belief before Layvin Kurzawa’s own goal put Barcelona halfway to the impossible.

When Lionel Messi buried a penalty early in the second half, the stadium began to tremble with the sense that history could genuinely be written.

That feeling appeared to fade when Cavani silenced the crowd with an away goal that left Barca needing three more, but Neymar – who’d go on to join PSG in a world-record €272 million deal just a few months later – refused to accept the script.

The Brazilian forward produced one of the greatest 10-minute cameos the competition has seen. First, he curled a sublime free kick past Kevin Trapp. Then, after Suarez was bundled over in the box, Neymar hammered in a penalty to set up the grand finale.

With PSG retreating into chaos, Neymar floated a delicate pass into the box for Sergi Roberto to stab home in the 95th minute. Camp Nou erupted into pandemonium. The tie ended 6-1 on the night, 6-5 on aggregate, and the word “Remontada” entered football folklore.

It was the first time a side had ever overturned a four-goal first-leg deficit in the competition and it has remained a reference point for every comeback since.

For Barcelona fans, it was proof that belief and defiance could conquer logic.

For PSG, it was a scar that still lingers. As these two giants prepare to meet again in 2025 – this time with Luis Enrique in charge of PSG – the past will be impossible to ignore.

Whatever happens on 1 October, the shadow of 2017 ensures that Barca vs PSG is never just another group-stage tie.
