Levi Colwill believes the role that he, Trevoh Chalobah and Reece James played in Chelsea’s stunning FIFA Club World Cup win can inspire the club’s academy prospects to reach similar heights.
Enzo Maresca’s men gloriouly toppled UEFA Champions League winners Paris St-Germain 3-0 at MeltLife Stadium on Sunday night to become the best club side on the planet.
Colwill could scarcely hide his delight afterwards, hailing the success of the club’s youth development system.
Colwill, Chalobah and James all graduated through the ranks at Cobham and the trio of England internationals started against PSG as Chelsea kept the French side scoreless.
“It doesn’t feel real yet to be honest,” Colwill told Chelsea TV post-match.
“I’ve got to let it sink in, it’s definitely surreal, but I’ve worked so hard to be here.
“Hopefully other academy boys can look at me, Reece and Trev and hopefully try and be like us and better.”
Chelsea have made huge strides under Maresca after collecting their second trophy in three months.
They won the Conference League after thumping Real Betis in Poland on May 28 and finished fourth in the Premier League to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
But beating PSG topped everything and Colwill added: “It feels amazing.
“All our hard work has paid off and now we’re the best team in the world.
“The celebrations are definitely going to continue – they aren’t over yet.”
Colwill also revealed how his side felt like they had been written off beforehand, with much of the pre-match hype surrounding PSG.
“Everyone was saying ‘how are you going to quieten PSG?’
“That was all they were saying, they weren’t talking about us too much, so we had to silence them and that’s what we did.”
