Dave Allen is looking to avoid a panic attack when he faces Filip Hrgovic in a Doncaster homecoming on Saturday night.
The two heavyweights meet at the Keepmoat Stadium, live on DAZN, in what is the biggest test of Allen’s career.
Since his first clash with Johnny Fisher two years ago, Allen has once again found himself being one of Britain’s most popular fighters, and last October was given a big fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov in Sheffield.
Just a short distance from Doncaster, this was a reward for Allen’s knockout win over Fisher in a rematch five months earlier. However, despite thousands of his devoted fans packing out the Utilita Arena, Allen struggled and lost after 12 rounds on the judges’ scorecards.
One thing that makes Allen stand out amongst a crowded scene of British fighters is his openness and honesty when reflecting on his career.
Following the announcement of his meeting with Hrgovic, Allen admitted he suffered a panic attack when making the ringwalk for his fight against Makhmudov.
When it comes to facing 'El Animal', Allen still does not know how he will react and whether he will sink or swim on what is the biggest night of his life.
“I spoke to my mum about it; I can’t tell you what my emotions will be. It’s impossible to know because it hasn’t happened yet,” Allen told DAZN News.
“All I can do is get in the best shape, and have gameplan A, B, C and D. I’m full of confidence, I’m expecting a good reception, and hopefully I will take it in my stride.”
There is also the frank admission from Allen that this fight with Hrgovic will be the first time he has fully committed to a training camp.
The signs have been there from Allen when it comes to his commitment for this meeting with Hrgovic.
Social media posts have shown the ‘White Rhino’ in impressive shape, and he revealed to DAZN News what’s changed to get him in fighting shape for his Doncaster homecoming.
“Through experience you learn things, I think I overdid it for the Makhmudov fight, I trained too hard. I had a 14-week camp, but halfway through I was knackered.
“For this one, the same effort from the Makhmudov camp, but a much shorter camp. I’ve started camp in much better shape.
“Instead of doing 14 mad weeks, I’ve kept myself in decent shape. I’ve got a six, seven-week camp and I feel in much better shape.”
