Arnold Barboza Jr walked into a hostile Co-op Live in Manchester, England on Saturday night and exited with the interim WBO super lightweight title to haul back to Long Beach, California, courtesy of a narrow split-decision win over Jack Catterall.
With his biggest victory to date, live on DAZN, Barboza (31-0, 11 KOs) not only realized his dream of becoming a world titleholder, but became the mandatory challenger to WBO 140-pound world champion Teofimo Lopez.
When asked about Lopez, Barboza didn't hesitate sending him a chilling warning that could also be applied to the rest of the super lightweight world titleholders.
"Man, anybody could get it any day of the week ending in the letter 'y,'" a jubilant Barboza told DAZN in the center of the ring.
The newly-crowned interim titleholder also expressed confidence in his team working expeditiously to secure his next big fight.
Barboza's tenacity and punch volume helped him edge Catterall and going up against an explosive, sound Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) would seemingly test the Golden Boy Promotions' fighter's skills that much further.
The other champions at 140 pounds include IBF champ Richardson Hitchins, WBA titleholder Jose Valenzuela and WBC champion Alberto Puello.
Hitchins, who became champion with a split-decision of his own over Liam Paro in December, wasn't impressed with Barboza.
While Barboza would likely have something to say about that, he and his team will celebrate his best victory yet.
