Justis Huni delivered the perfect gameplan for the bulk of his heavyweight clash with Fabio Wardley until one lapse in concentration was immediately punished.
Travelling to Ipswich last week as a major underdog, Huni was on his way to making a mockery of the pre-fight odds as he produced a disciplined performance to frustrate Wardley and build a healthy lead on the scorecards.
Huni tried his best to beat the count and although he got to his feet, the referee had no hesitation when declaring the contest over.
Despite the setback, there was enough in Huni’s showing to give him plenty of beleief that he can return from this loss and still play a big role in the future of the heavyweight division.
It is unclear when the Australian star will make his return to the ring, but he has stated that a future showdown with Wardley, in what would be a big rematch, is very much a priority.
“I’m absolutely gutted. I felt like I was doing everything right, just boxing smart and sticking to the plan. I got caught. It happens in this sport,” said Huni when speaking to BoxingScene .
“Congratulations to Fabio. He’s a warrior and he found the shot he needed. But this isn’t the end for me, not even close. I would absolutely love a rematch. I stepped up at short notice.”
