Jadier Herrera and Ricardo Nunez both invite inside action.
So, something will have to give when they clash for the interim WBC lightweight world title as part of the Agit Kabayel vs. Damian Knyba main card Saturday at Rudolf Weber Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, and live on DAZN.
The undefeated Cuban fighter Herrera (17-0, 15 KOs) enters the bout with 11 straight knockouts including the seventh-round stoppage of Jose Rodolfo Macias Enriquez last March. He faces a battle-tested Nunez (26-7, 22 KOs) who had his three-fight win streak snapped via a disqualification in June when he punched Jon Fernandez after a referee’s stop and the latter couldn’t continue.
Will Herrera pound Nunez toward another scintillating knockout? Or will Nunez show enough craftiness to put the first smudge on the Cuban’s ledger? DAZN News counterpunches, weighing in on who has the edge entering this bout.
Both Jadier Herrera and Ricardo Nunez pressure with intention in the pocket, though the former is a bit more active and free-flowing with his hands, letting them go fully.
It is that volume that might give the 23-year-old Cuban southpaw the edge here in this matchup of styles.
Both Herrera and Nunez pack power as well, though the former is downright explosive.
Herrera counts all but two of his victories by stoppage for a sizzling knockout ratio of 88 percent. His unrelenting pace and pressure only add to his power punching where he is throwing heavy-handed, dynamite shots with nothing but bad intentions.
Nunez, too, has power as evidenced by his own knockout ratio of nearly 85 percent. However, Herrera has a bit more oomph to his power punches.
Listen to Herrera during press conferences and he is menacing with his words, often vowing to do harm to his opponents and then making good on those threats by forcing them to wilt under immense pressure.
At 32, Nunez counts nearly double the pro bouts than Herrera, but did not fare well against a fellow knockout artist in Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis who stopped the Panamanian back in 2019.
While Nunez' ring savvy should be a factor, Herrera gets the slight advantage here, too.
Herrera has been mowing down his competition so convincingly, it is hard to see even a tried and true veteran like Nunez, who counts seven losses to his name, having the answers to hand the Cuban his first defeat. It is for that reason and Herrera’s explosive punch power that DAZN News gives him the 3-0 edge.
