Raul Curiel overcame last-gasp opponent Jordan Panthen in an engaging encounter to boost the credit of both men in California on Friday night.
The former was originally due to face Alexis Rocha in a rematch following their December 2024 majority draw before the latter withdrew with illness.
It sparked a frantic chase to find a late replacement, with the welterweight contender ultimately securing a catchweight bout against 'The Patriot'.
Despite the short-notice call, Panthen more than played his part in an entertaining contest that thrilled fans at the Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert.
Ultimately however, Curiel swept the affair by unanimous decision, with 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93 scorecards that further underlined his title chances.
Speaking in the ring afterwards, the Mexican paid tribute to his opponent, while underlining his hopes he can challenge for silverware soon.
"It was a tremendous fight for the people," he stated. "I respect Jordan. He’s a warrior who fought all 10 rounds, and I enjoyed every round,
"I’m strong, and we went toe to toe, but I can feel the weight. I hope we get a world title shot when I go back down to welterweight."
