Tony Ferguson has issued a chilling warning to Salt Papi ahead of their Misfits Boxing bout this Saturday, August 30, at the AO Arena in Manchester.
El Cucuy, a former UFC interim lightweight champion, will be making his professional boxing debut against the English-Filipino social media star, whose unorthodox, fan-friendly style has seen him rise to prominence in the crossover boxing world, with a record of 6–2–0 (5 KOs).
Despite his inexperience in the squared circle, Ferguson warned Salt Papi that his “tenacity” will be the difference in their showdown, before declaring, “I’m not an influencer. This is what I do,” in an exclusive interview with DAZN.
The UFC legend added, “I don't have to worry about anybody taking me down. I don't have to use my elbows. I’ve competed in multiple sports, and now I’m going to go out there, hit him, and he’s not going to hit me. This is a completely different game.”
Crossover boxing sensation Salt Papi has gained massive popularity in the space, most recently stopping King Kenny at Misfits 19 in impressive fashion.
Tasked with facing off against Ferguson, Salt Papi admitted it was a step up in opposition for him but remains undaunted by the size of the task.
“I’m so grateful for Misfits Boxing for giving me these big fights back-to-back. When I heard that I was going to fight Tony Ferguson, I couldn’t say no. I’m going to be sharing the ring with a legendary fighter,” he said. “Of course, I’ve seen a lot of his fights. It’s a big step up for me. I will prove I’m ready for the big challenge like Tony.”
Watch Darren Till vs. Luke Rockhold, Tony Ferguson vs Salt Papi and Dillon Danis, Joey Essex and more fight only on DAZN PPV this Saturday night, August 30.
