The talk heading into Saturday's fight between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Erickson Lubin was the former taking on previous unified welterweight champion Jaron "Boots" Ennis in a 2026 superfight.
Ortiz held up his end of the bargain, plowing through Lubin in under five minutes to retain the interim WBC junior middleweight title from Dickies Arena that was live on DAZN .
“I’m in my prime. I’ll only be better from here," Ortiz told DAZN's Chris Mannix.
Ortiz was talking with Mannix when he waved Ennis over. They went face-to-face when the talking commenced. The two undefeated American stars agreed to a fight in 2026, which would be one of the biggest fights in boxing.
"Do you got a yes for me," Ortiz asked Ennis at the end of the exchange.
"Yes," Ennis said definitively."
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) was impressed by what he saw from Ortiz on Saturday night. But "Boots" made it clear to Ortiz who the better of the two and will show it when they lock horns.
“It’s the best fight in boxing," Ennis told Mannix. "He done a great job. He looked good. But I’m going to show the world why I’m the best in the world.
“I’m going to back it up and show the world why I’m the best in the world."
Ennis and Ortiz proceeded to go into a back
"Your dad was the first one that said I was ducking. It’s on video. It is on video.," Ortiz proclaimed.
“We didn’t get an offer."
“It don’t matter. The time is now," Ennis retorted. "Let’s get this money and make this fight happen.
"It does matter, Ortiz fired back. Because you said I was ducking. We started talking after you guys started talking. It’s retaliation."
“I’m going to make you pay for everything they said," Ennis fired back.
