Is the Premier League on course for five Champions League spots?
With the league phase of the Champions League nearing its conclusion, many will be wondering whether the Premier League is on course to receive five spots again next season.
This term, England and Italy each have five teams competing in Europe's premier knockout competition because their clubs' performances in Europe last campaign.
While the Premier League sides are performing admirably in the Champions League, the extra spot is also based on performance in the UEFA Europa League and the Conference League.
Newcastle United and AS Roma benefited from an extra spot this campaign, but who will reap the rewards next season?

How do European Performance Spots work?
Only two countries can secure a European Performance Spot for next season.
To determine which nations will secure these spots, UEFA analyses the overall performance of clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and the Conference League.
There is some mathematics involved in working this out, as UEFA creates an average by taking the total coefficient score and dividing it by the number of clubs each league has in European competition.
No matter the competition, a win is worth two coefficient points while a draw is worth one.
However, there is one crucial differential as bonus points are awarded on final standings in the league phase and knockout rounds, with these of higher value in the Champions League.
For example, those teams that are eliminated from the Champions League league phase will receive more points than the team that finishes top of the Conference League table.
How is the Premier League performing?
While the Premier League is currently on course to receive five Champions League spots next term, that could all change over the coming weeks.
As it stands, all nine English clubs are still in Europe, but after the upcoming round of European matches, some teams will likely have to settle for a play-off spot and could therefore be eliminated.
England is in first place in terms of coefficient points. Clubs have accumulated 127.375 points, which, divided by nine, works out as an average of 14.152.
In second place is Poland with 13.625 points, but given that they only have three clubs progressing, all of which are in the Conference League, they will soon slide down the table.
Germany, Spain and Italy all have more than 12 points each, with all their clubs still in Europe, although each nation has clubs at risk of being eliminated before the knockout stages.

Which Premier League clubs are on course for Champions League places?
Arsenal have opened up a significant gap at the top of the Premier League, meaning Champions League qualification is nailed on for next season.
Manchester City and Aston Villa have a decent cushion on the chasing pack and are therefore in a strong position to qualify alongside the Gunners.
However, it is all to play for the remaining places, with just six points separating fourth-place Liverpool and 12th-place Brighton.
