Valerien Ismael urges FA to scrap extra time after Blackburn lose on penalties

PA

Blackburn head coach Valerien Ismael has called for extra time in the FA Cup to be scrapped after his side were beaten on penalties at Hull.

Any Carabao Cup ties that finish in a draw after 90 minutes go straight to a shootout and Ismael wants the Football Association, which scrapped replays last season, to follow suit with its competition.

“The players played in real time 134 minutes,” Ismael said. “It’s incredible. It just puts the pressure on the body of the players.

“You can’t tell me that in extra time we saw a quality game, it was just ‘You get the ball, we get the ball’. It makes no sense. It’s better to play 90 minutes with full energy and, at the end, play a penalty shootout.”

There was just one shot on target between the Sky Bet Championship rivals in a drab 90 minutes at the MKM Stadium, although David Akintola crashed a volleyed rebound off the bar in the additional half-hour.

A goalless draw meant the third-round contest was settled by a shootout, where Hull goalkeeper Dillon Phillips saved spot-kicks from substitutes Yuki Ohashi and Moussa Baradji as the Tigers won 4-3.

Ismael, who made eight changes to his side, added: “You can’t expect to see a great game when everyone is tired and everyone tried to come through as good as possible. But you want to win so you try to find the best way.”

Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic was delighted to end Hull’s “curse” as they reached the fourth round of the cup for the first time in six years – especially after his game-plan went up in smoke after 11 minutes.

The hosts were forced into a change before kick-off because of a quad issue to Matt Crooks, while Darko Gyabi went off early on with a groin injury and looks to be facing a prolonged period out.

“We’ve broken the curse,” Jakirovic said. “I’m very pleased with that. For us, the game went completely wrong from the warm-up and we had to make changes. We had a completely different plan for this game.”

Kyle Joseph, Oli McBurnie, Charlie Hughes and Akintola were all on target with their spot-kicks to lift Hull to victory, and Jakirovic will be keeping a close eye on Monday evening’s fourth-round draw.

Owner Acun Ilicali admitted he is craving a showdown against former Hull manager Liam Rosenior, who this week took the reins at Chelsea, although ideally not until the Wembley final.

“Liam is great guy and I wish him all the best,” Jakirovic said. “He’s a good coach, it’s a nice opportunity and he will be great (at Chelsea).”
