A key light heavyweight tilt is off, but a star gets the chance for the spotlight.
Matchroom Boxing announced on Monday that interim WBO champion Callum Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) had to bow out of his scheduled April 18 fight against top contender David Morrell due to an injury suffered in training camp, according to The Ring's Mike Coppinger. It is unknown if the bout will be rescheduled. But the remainder of the card will continue as rising light heavyweight star Ben Whittaker will now headline the event against Braiain Suarez.
"An injury has forced Callum Smith out of his light heavyweight clash with David Morrell at the M&S Arena Liverpool on Saturday, April 18," Matchroom Boxing said in a statement.
"The event will still go ahead with Ben Whittaker now headlining against Braiain Suarez (21-4, 20 KOs).
"Ticket refunds are now available via M&S Bank Arena or Victory Live if required."
Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KOs), originally set for the co-main event of this card, now returns on top of the marquee. The 28-year-old made his Matchroom debut at the end of November, wiping out Benjamin Gavazi inside of one round.
