The boxing world was given a jolt on Monday when it was announced that Jake Paul would face two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua before the year is out.
Taking place on December 19 in Miami, Paul will attempt to do the unthinkable and topple one of this generation's biggest boxing stars.
Joshua has vowed to 'break the internet over Jake Paul's face', and while he is expected to make easy work of the American, there is the miniscule danger that he could come unstuck against 'The Problem Child'.
Promoter Frank Warren is no stranger to being involved in crossover fights similar to Paul-Joshua after being in Tyson Fury's corner for his clash with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou two years ago.
With Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn hinting that his fighter is edging closer towards retirement, making a return against Paul 14 months after being stopped by Daniel Dubois was not on anyone's bingo card.
While AJ could have made his long awaited return to the ring against an unknown name to ease himself back into the sweet science, Warren understands why Joshua has decided to face one of boxing's most controversial figures.
"The other side of it is he’s coming off a devastating and comprehensive beatdown. But he could be fighting another guy who’s 10-0, no one would stand for that," Warren said. "This is big viewing figures for obvious reasons."
Then came the warning for Warren that if Joshua is beaten, then his boxing career will be all but over.
"If he loses it will damage his legacy, it would be all over."
After speaking to Frank Warren yesterday in Manchester, I can't help but agree with him.
For Anthony Joshua, this fight is a lose-lose situation.
Win by knockout within seconds, no surprise, if Joshua goes the distance with Jake Paul and wins, then cue mass hysteria and calls for him to retire.
If Paul somehow wins, then Joshua's boxing career has to end with the major names at heavyweight, including a retired Tyson Fury, questioning why they should step into the ring with someone who was beaten by a YouTuber turned boxer.
