Composed Mohammed Alakel triumphs over Engel Gomez on fight card of the century
Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Alakel moved to 3-0 on Saturday night with a decision win over Engel Gomez.
Alakel came out with a spring in his step and established the jab straightaway. The Saudi fighter’s speed was catching Gomez off guard with quick combinations and an uppercut which stunned the Nicaraguan. Alakel then capped the opening round off with a left hook to the head.
Gomez kept Alakel on his toes in the second with a right hand. This resulted in Alakel being more reserved with his punches as he looked to avoid being drawn into a dog fight.

An Alakel right uppercut in round three ensured momentum swung back his way with Gomez reluctant to come forward due to his opponent’s superior ability. It was clear Alakel was enjoying himself in the ring and began to turn the screw.
A stern telling off from coach Joe Gallagher before the fourth prompted Alakel to let his hands go and successive sharp right hands saw Gomez backed on to the ropes. Alakel then opted for control instead of reckless swinging against a durable opponent.
A quieter fifth preceded more composed shot selection from Alakel in round six. A smooth one-two landed on Gomez who gave the super featherweight novice vital rounds in a boxing career in its infancy.
Once the final bell rang, Alakel was frustrated, shaking his head in the corner, but while he was unable to bring this contest to an early end, there were still plenty of positives.
Most notably his slick footwork and ability to pick his shots well helped him secure a 60-54 win on the referee's scorecard.
