Former IBF super featherweight champion Joe Cordina is still holding out hope that a fight with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson can be made.
Stevenson is a name which has frequently been on Cordina's radar, and it looked like the two would finally meet on the undercard of the first undisputed light heavyweight title fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
However, due to a hand injury, Stevenson was forced to pull out and Cordina's period of activity now stretches to a full year.
Speaking to The Ring, Cordina recalled the frustration and chaos that surrounded his pursuit of Stevenson.
"After the fight got cancelled the first time, he inboxed and said ‘Sorry I had to pull out, I f—d up my hand’. He said we’d definitely fight down the line," Cordina said.
"Fingers crossed we get that fight as that’s someone who I want to fight. When I was at super feather and he was at super feather he called me out after I won a world title and I said, ‘No problem, let me have my break’, and then we’ll go again.
"He had a fight lined up, no problem, I had a fight lined up, then he didn’t make the weight and moved up to lightweight. Obviously, our fight was scheduled at lightweight, then it fell through."
While Stevenson has got another opponent to prepare for following his win over Josh Padley in February, Cordina is still keen to face the American and become a two-weight world champion.
"I just want to fight him; I want to test myself against the best and he is one of the best. I also want to take what he’s got, which is a title."
While Cordina's next fight is yet to be confirmed, Stevenson will return to action on July 12 when he faces William Zepeda on a Ring Magazine card at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. Hamzah Sheeraz and Edgar Berlanga are also set to feature on the bill in a super middleweight contest.
