Voice of American boxing previews historic New York Times Square fight card

DAZN
Garcia & Canelo PPV Bundle - $90; £34.99; €39.99

The sport of boxing is preparing itself for a historic and unique event on May 2.

Taking place in New York’s Times Square and broadcast live on DAZN PPV, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez will take to the ring in one of the world’s most famous streets.

However, it’s not just a fight card taking place in Times Square which makes it an unmissable event for boxing fans, May 2 will also see the return of the legendary Jim Lampley to blow-by-blow commentary.Lampley was best known as a being the face HBO’s boxing broadcasts until the final airing on December 8, 2018. Since then, Lampley has not picked up the microphone, but to the delight of boxing fans across the world, they will get to hear his iconic fight once more.

In an exclusive interview with DAZN News, Lampley looked ahead to the three-fight extravaganza and believes that all three fighters need to put on an exceptional performance to re-establish themselves as major players in boxing.

“All three careers are in flux at this moment. All three careers have in some way suffered something of a setback,” Lampley said.

“Haney was given a victory in New York, which a lot of people don't see as a victory because they're still bonded with Ryan.

“Ryan [Garcia] was penalized for a drug violation in New York. And I don't know of anybody in boxing who's been penalized for a drug violation who has stuck up his hand and said, ‘Oh yeah, that's right I use performance enhancing drugs.’ Everybody denies. Everybody pushes back. Ryan has denied and is pushing back.

“Teofimo [Lopez] was seen as a cosmic talent off of his victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko and then wound up with a couple of unexpectedly ineffective performances. He has come back to win some fights and re-established his reputation to a certain degree, but he needs a big stage and a big win.

“All three of them are looking for a victory in Times Square before a New York audience in this unique showcase that will re-establish their careers and put them back into star status.”

Garcia and Haney will face Rolando Romero and former unified super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez respectively. If they win, Garcia and Haney are expected to meet in a rematch later this year after their 2024 clash was declared a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for Ostarine. Garcia won the contest on the night by majority decision.

Teofimo Lopez meanwhile will defend his WBO and Ring Magazine super lightweight titles against Arnold Barboza Jr which he hopes will be a springboard for some major unification fights.
