Their first fight ended in a controversial split-decision for Johnny Fisher back in December.
Now, Fisher (13-0, 11 KOs) and Dave Allen (23-7-2, 18 KOs) will run it back in a highly-anticipated rematch Saturday night at Copper Box Arena in London, and live on DAZN.
With both men wanting closure, DAZN News analyses who has the edge heading into their renewal of rivalry.
Both heavyweights are there to be hit, with neither shying away from contact.
Their original clash in Saudi Arabia in December had Fisher starting out as the aggressor, landing the crisper combinations that split Allen’s guard.
But Allen drastically changed that in the fifth round when he unloaded on a short left hand that made Fisher taste the canvas.
What ensued from there showed Allen’s capability to go around the guard, or up and over it with clubbing shots that hurt Fisher.
The fact that most of this output came in the pocket should give the edge to Allen.
However, Allen’s style is something that Fisher, with adjustments, can possibly resolve.
As the fighter with the faster hands, it is a possibility that Fisher manages just that.
Eleven of Fisher’s 13 wins have come by the way of stoppage for a dazzling knockout ratio of nearly 85 percent.
That said, despite Fisher being Allen’s junior by seven years, it was Allen’s power shots that were more pointed and resounding in their first fight.
Can Fisher change that with one shot in the rematch? Certainly.
However, stemming from their December fight, one would point to Allen getting the edge in power. After all, he did score a knockdown in their fight.
Go back and watch as Allen and Fisher awaited the official judges’ ruling to their first fight. Allen looked confident, his hand held up high in anticipation of his name being called. Fisher looked rather despondent … until judges somewhat surprisingly called his name.
Yes, Fisher won the fight to remain undefeated. But the split-decision result in his favour remains highly controversial.
Fisher must prove to fans, critics, and most importantly himself that he is indeed the better fighter and that is pressure that Allen does not have on his shoulders entering this rematch.
We have it 2-1 toward Allen, but this heavyweight rematch is anyone’s fight. Will the younger Fisher once again come out as the aggressor, setting the pace?
Or will he once again fall victim to the clubbing counters from Allen who will get redemption? We will find out Saturday night in London.
