Jack Catterall secures brutal eleventh-round stoppage to dispatch Ekow Essuman

Jack Catterall secured a dramatic eleventh-round stoppage over Ekow Essuman to reaffirm his credentials as a welterweight contender at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The former knocked his opponent down in the fourth and then sent him sailing between the ropes in the penultimate round with a monster left hook to secure victory.

The star was restrained in his celebrations, with his opponent in need of immediate medical attention at ringside after he appeared to slump unconscious to the canvas.

But after a 2025 that began with a bitter loss to Arnold Barboza Jr. at light welterweight, 'El Gato' has now emphatically ended the year on a high note heading into 2026.

For Essuman, however, who dispatched Catterall's former rival Josh Taylor into retirement earlier this year, he will now face questions over his own future at thirty-six.

With the crowd periodically distracted by flashes of the headline acts beamed onto big screens, both men sought to deliver as chief support across the early exchanges.

Catterall proved the more incisive fighter across the opening three rounds, finding purchase with his jab and counter-hook to stamp his authority before the fourth round.

There, a blockbuster combo dropped Essuman to the canvas, blood fizzing from a facial cut, and although the latter beat the count, he continued to struggle for rhythm.

Yet even as Catterall pushed further openings in the fifth and sixth, his opponent's famed tank began to steady the contest, seemingly clawing back rounds in the middle.

With his left eye rapidly closing, Essuman nevertheless thrived off the scrappier exchanges, putting his foe against the ropes in the eighth and ninth to further frustrate him.

Catterall was forced through the ropes midway through the tenth round, though it was not ruled as a knockdown by the referee, as tempers seemed close to boiling over.

Ultimately, however, the star found the finish he was looking for with a TKO that seemed to catch everyone else off-guard, and sets up another title challenge in the near future.
