Jack Catterall vs Ekow Essuman: Who has the edge heading into their fight?

DAZN
Eubank Jr. vs Benn 2 - only on DAZN PPV - Saturday

After bouncing back from a tough split-decision loss to Arnold Barboza Jr. by defeating Harlem Eubank over the summer, Jack Catterall looks to end his year with a bang and line up a prosperous 2026.

To do that, Catterall will aim to defeat Ekow Essuman at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, and live, only on DAZN Pay-Per-View, on Saturday night. The bout will serve as chief support to the huge Chris Eubank Jr.-Conor Benn rematch.

Catterall (31-2, 13 KOs) was awarded a technical unanimous decision over Harlem Eubank at the start of the seventh round after both boxers suffered nasty cuts due to an accidental clash of heads, leading to the stoppage. Meanwhile, Essuman (22-1, 8 KOs) is coming off outpointing Josh Taylor for a shocking unanimous decision upset in Scotland this past May.

Will Catterall do enough to have his hand raised this weekend, inching closer to a possible welterweight title shot next year? Or will Essuman finish his year with another notable victory in tow?

DAZN News analyzes who has the edge entering their co-main event.

Boxing Styles

Jack Catterall, especially early into fights, will patiently download information about his opponent, while waiting to unload an aptly-timed punch from the southpaw stance.

The Chorley man often abandons his guard doing this and his output can be low while in search of that right blow, though the threat of him uncorking that left hand looms.

Ekow Essuman, who works behind a disciplined guard, will have to navigate that stalking style and can do so with pressure and volume punching.

Steady, not overwhelming, pressure is something Essuman produces well. It might give the Botswana-British fighter the slight edge in this clash of styles early. However, Catterall, with feints, clever setups and overall boxing savvy, could impose his will.

Still, Essuman’s ability to bring the fight to Catterall could garner him the slim edge in this category.

Power

There is no doubt that Catterall has power in his left hand. Many times his patience in trying to land it is worth the wait as Catterall’s left can be a fight-altering weapon when timed and detonated with precision.

Essuman has some good pop with his right but is more known for his engine and steady pressure.

Catterall has the advantage here.

Mental Warfare

Unsatisfied with what he has produced over the course of his 2025 body of work, Catterall sought the services of American trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis who is also the father of WBA super welterweight interim champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.

The change has him feeling his best entering this weekend’s bout as he took the time during Thursday’s press conference to say he is “switched on” and ready to do the job Saturday night.

Essuman, who was the underdog against Taylor and is the underdog against Catterall, promised a “world-class performance” where he delivers a “statement” this weekend.

Both men count wins over Taylor, though Catterall’s quality of opponents and experience is deeper with fights against the likes of Barboza Jr., Regis Prograis and Jorge Linares.

The longer this fight goes, that experience should help.

Who has the edge in Catterall vs Essuman?

Catterall made it clear that he believes Essuman is a good fighter but nothing he hasn’t seen or dealt with before.

“I’m going to meet him in the middle of the ring and show him what’s up,” Catterall vowed during the press conference.

It is a steely determination that the Chorley man has and now must exhibit toward a launch into a successful New Year.

DAZN News gives Catterall the 2-1 edge to wrap up his 2025 on a positive note.
